Interview:
Matt Johnson, series creator,
and Matt Miller, executive producer,
"Nirvanna the Band Show"
![]() Nirvanna the Band Show creators Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol expand their web series, which ran from 2007-2009, into the first scripted series for Vice. The series stars Johnson and McCarrol as two friends who perform together in a band named Nirvanna (the second "n" legally allows them to use the same name as a certain grudge rock band). They undertake their fictional misadventures in real-world situations, such as building a Christmas parade float or crashing a screening during the Sundance Film Festival. Spike Jonze serves as an executive producer. Episodes of Nirvanna the Band Show will screen 2:55 p.m. Sept. 23 and 8:55 p.m. Sept. 26 during Fantastic Fest at the Alamo South Lamar. Co-creator Matt Johnson and executive producer Matt Miller discussed Nirvanna the Band Show during an interview focused on their new film, Operation Avalanche.
