Interview:
Jake Gyllenhaal and
director Jean-Marc Vallée,
"Demolition"
In director Jean-Marc Vallée’s drama Demolition, Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Davis, a New York investment banker whose grief for his recently deceased wife manifests itself in an unusual and troubling way. He finds himself compelled to demolish everything around him—literally and figuratively—before he can start the process of putting back together the shattered pieces of his life. He also strikes up a friendship with Naomi Watts’ vending machine customer service rep Karen and her 15-year-old son Chris (Judah Lewis). Struggling to be true to who he is, Chris finds solace in the music of the 1960s and 1970s. Demolition’s soundtrack plays an important role in the film, with Heart’s “Crazy on You” serving as its unofficial theme song. Jean-Marc Vallée previously directed The Young Victoria, Dallas Buyers Club, and Wild. Screenwriter Bryan Sipe previously wrote The Choice. Demolition premiered locally at this year’s SXSW Film Festival and opened April 8 in theaters. KOOP 91.7 FM programmer Tracey Schulz spoke with Demolition star Jake Gyllenhaal and director Jean-Marc Vallée during the SXSW Film Festival on behalf of Lights Camera Austin.
