Interview:
Sidi Wang,
writer/director,
"Winter Ceremony"
In 2019, Chinese filmmaker Sidi Wang graduated from the University of Texas’ Radio, Television and Film program, but Austin remained very much on her mind after she moved to New York City to continue her studies. For her NYU thesis film Winter Ceremony, Wang returned to Austin to shoot the narrative short that celebrates her late father and co-stars her real-life mother. In Winter Ceremony, a divorced couple from China travel to Austin for their daughter’s mid-December graduation from UT. The reunion prompts an exploration of family history as the daughter’s uncertain future looms. After premiering locally at this year’s SXSW Film & TV Festival, Winter Ceremony will screen at 5:25 p.m. June 25 at the AFS Cinema as part of the Austin Asian American Film Festival’s Texas Shorts Block. Chinese filmmaker Sidi Wang will soon graduate from NYU.
