"Bastards of Soul"
Directed by the Austin-raised Paul Levatino, the documentary Bastards of Soul starts as a documentary about the Dallas rhythm and soul band of the same name but ends as a celebration of the life and career of their late lead singer, Chadwick Murray. In 2021, the Bastards of Soul gathered at Echo Lab in Denton for their first post-COVID recording session. A few months later, Murray died unexpectedly at age 45 of a rare respiratory illness, soon after the birth of his son Lennox. Levatino first captures Murray and the Bastards of Soul recording their final three songs together, “You Let Me Down Again,” “It’s Gonna Be Alright,” and “The Truth Won’t Change Your Mind.” He then details the events leading up to and the aftermath of Murray’s tragic passing through interviews with his widow Hannah and his bandmates. Finally, he follows the Bastards of Soul as they reunite to record a song Murray left behind as a demo, “This Love.” Bastards of Soul, which premiered locally at the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival, is now available for digital/on-demand streaming. A veteran of the Texas music and entertainment industry, Austin-raised Paul Levatino has directed music videos, documentary shorts, and TV specials. He is currently working on the docuseries Legends of the Longhorn about the historic Longhorn Ballroom in Dallas.
