Fantastic Fest runs Sept. 17-24 at the Alamo South Lamar. Austin’s annual celebration of studio and independent genre film opens Sept. 17 with director Mike T. Nelson’s giant snake thriller Beware Boiúna and a gala screening of director Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil remake. The festival closes Sept. 24 with The Swallow from Pet Semetary remake directors Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer. High-profile titles include director Martin McDonagh’s CIA comedy thriller Wild Horse Nine, the Maika Monroe slasher Victorian Psycho, the Kristen Stewart-Woody Harrelson quirky comedy Full Phil, the newly added Robert Pattinson drama Primetime, and Mike Flanagan’s TV miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie. World premieres include The Cycle, Death of a Yellow Bird, Girl in the Night, Godmother, The Heretiks, Into the Sky, Pathetic Fallacy, Posthumous, Sick, What Happened to Doris?, and Play House, the winner of last year’s Fantastic Pitches competition. Burnt End selections include I Have Proof and Little Doors. Retrospective screenings include Blood Fest, Hell House, and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. Fantastic Fest will honor the legendary director Walter Hill and screen his 1987 Texas border contemporary western Extreme Prejudice. After making its Fantastic Fest debut last year, the Golden Hornet-American Film Genre Archive collaboration Cinema Recomposed returns with Silent Monsters, a program of silent film horror shorts set to new live scores written by seven young composers. Finally, Fantastic Fest will keep audiences guessing about this year's two Secret Screenings.
