Written and directed by Lilian T. Mehrel, the dramedy Honeyjoon follows a mother and her daughter on a grief anniversary sightseeing tour of the Azores. The Persian-British Lela (Amira Casar) travels to the Portuguese archipelago to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of her husband with their daughter June (Ayden Mayeri). The Azores held a special place in the heart of Lela’s European husband, and she wants to visit the locales and attractions that helped him with his own battle with grief. As they grieve in their own different ways, Lela and June quickly distract themselves from addressing and resolving issues that complicate their relationship: Lela fixates on civilian protests in Iran while the very single June longs for their hunky tour guide, João. Honeyjoon stars Call Me By My Name’s Amira Casar as Lela, I Love That for You and Mr. Throwback’s Ayden Mayeri as June, and Portuguese star José Condessa as tour guide João. Honeyjoon will open this year’s Austin Asian American Film Festival at 6:30 p.m. June 24 at the AFS Cinema with writer/director Lilian T. Mehrel in attendance. Lilian T. Mehrel makes her feature-length directorial debut with Honeyjoon.
