In writer/director Katie Aselton’s romantic drama Magic Hour, Aselton and Daveed Diggs play a married couple who spend a desert getaway examining the future of their relationship. Over the course of several days, Erin (Aselton) and Charlie (Diggs) must grapple with what once was, what is, and what will be. Feeling literally and figuratively alone in a friend’s house in the Joshua Tree National Park, Erin’s begins to lose her grip on reality to avoid accepting the harsh truth about her life with her beloved soulmate Charlie. Katie Aselton co-wrote the single-location two-hander with her husband and former Austinite Mark Duplass. Magic Hour, which premiered locally at last year’s SXSW Film & TV Festival, is now available for digital/on-demand viewing. Katie Aselton previously directed The Freebie, Black Rock, and Mack & Rita. She also directed the SXSW Film & TV Festival 2026 selection Their Town, written by Mark Duplass and starring their daughter Ora Duplass. Aselton also starred in the TV series The League with Duplass and appeared in the films The Puffy Chair, Our Idiot Brother, The Sea of Trees, Father Figures, Book Club, The Tomorrow Man, She Dies Tomorrow, and Silk Road. She recently guest starred in the season 2 finale of the Shudder series The Creep Tapes as Angela, the sister of Mark Duplass’ serial killer Peachfuzz.
