"Broken Land"
Co-written and directed by the Austin-based J.T. Walker, the Texas border drama Broken Land stars David Morse as Carson Tidwell, a rancher who strikes up an unexpected friendship with a young El Salvadoran migrant he finds on his land soon after her illegal border crossing into the United States. The widower’s quiet existence comes to an end when he shoots Irena (newcomer Jaklyn Bejarano) as she and other migrants trespass on his property. Accepting the consequences of his actions, Carson cares for Irena as she recuperates from her wounds. But Irena’s plans to reunite with her family in Colorado is placed in jeopardy when Carson’s estranged son Harley—a border patrol agent—begins investigating a report of a migrant shooting near Carson’s ranch. Newcomer Jaklyn Bejarano plays Irena; The Old Man’s Bill Heck plays Harley. Broken Land, which premiered locally under the title La Gloria at the 2024 Austin Film Festival, is available for digital/on-demand viewing beginning June 12. David Morse launched his acting career with a six-season run as Dr. Jack Morrison on the 1980s medical procedural St. Elsewhere. His subsequent TV work includes Hack, Treme, Outsiders, Escape at Dannemora, The Chair, The Last Thing He Told Me, and the current Prime Video series We Were Lairs. He has appeared in the films The Indian Runner, The Crossing Guard, The Good Son, 12 Monkeys, The Rock, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Contact, The Green Mile, Dancer in the Dark, 16 Blocks, Disturbia, The Hurt Locker, Concussion, Cabrini, and the upcoming Mayday.
