Interview:
David Liu,
director,
"To Be Seen"
Directed by David Liu, the documentary To Be Seen chronicles the struggles four Austin food establishments faced during the COVID-19 pandemic and the arduous task owners and management undertook to not just regain their patrons but to adjust to and evolve in a post-pandemic world. Liu focuses on two restaurants, L'Oca d'Oro and Foreign & Domestic, and two food trucks, Pho Craft and LeRoy and Lewis, the latter of which opened its brick and mortar location in 2023. Liu employs these four establishments not just to detail how the pandemic impacted Austin’s food and service industry but to examine how it changed the city as a whole. To Be Seen will screen at 7 p.m. July 1 at the AFS Cinema. The documentary will also screen at 7 p.m. July 13 at the Bullock Museum’s Texas Spirit Theater and at 5:30 p.m. July 14 at the Austin Central Library’s Special Event Center. The Austin-based David Liu transitions from the tech industry to filmmaking with his feature-length directorial debut To Be Seen.
