"Cinema Recomposed: Silent Monsters"
The Austin-based composer laboratory Golden Hornet returns to Fantastic Fest on Sept. 20 with its second Cinema Recomposed screening and live score concert. Launched last year by Golden Hornet and the Austin-based American Genre Film Archive (AGFA), the Cinema Recomposed program offers young composers the opportunity to create new scores for silent films. For Golden Hornet’s sophomore program, Cinema Recomposed: Silent Monsters, seven composers were each commissioned to score a silent horror short. David Wingo, Nicoletta Nomicou, Mark Orton, Peter Stopschinksi, Alexis Marsch, and Felipe Perez Santiago were among the mentors assigned to the composers, each aged between 17 and 24 and some are graduates of Golden Hornet’s Young Composer Collective. A string quartet will perform the seven scores during the Cinema Recomposed: Silent Monsters world premiere screening at 11:40 a.m. Sept. 20 at the Alamo South Lamar during Fantastic Fest. Among the participating young composers: Carter Smith, Caroline Feitosa, and Annika Huprikar. Austinite Carter Smith, who is currently studying at NYU, scored 1919’s Ghosts of Slumber Mountain and was mentored by Mark Orton and Peter Stopschinksi. Caroline Feitosa, an Austinite based in Denver, scored 1910’s Frankenstein and was mentored by Alexis Marsch and Felipe Perez Santiago. New York-based Annika Huprikar scored 1912’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and was mentored by David Wingo and Nicoletta Nomicou.
