The Austin Film Society's August 2026 programming at the AFS Cinema is highlighted by the series Three Non-Films by Jafar Panahi and first three films directed by the Coen brothers (Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing). Special screenings include the second season premiere of The 23rd Street Mural Project with project director Mike Woolf and artist Kerry Awn in attendance; 1996's Trees Lounge with star/writer/director Steve Buscemi in attendance; 2016's rotoscoped documentary Tower with Austin-based director Keith Maitland in attendance; 1976's Car Wash with "Blaxploitation Cinema: The Essential Reference Guide" author Josiah Howard in attendance; the new documentary Rebel With a Clause with subject Ellen Jovin and her husband-director Brandt Johnson in attendance; the new documentary Our Body Electric with director Dana Reilly and bodybuilder Chelsea Dion in attendance; the one-hour program of short films and videos Stepping into the Unknown: Films from the Bob Dylan Center with Bob Dylan Center director Steven Jenkins in conversation with Austin-based X and The Knitters singer-songwriter John Doe; and the Queer Cinema: Lost & Found selection Castration Movie Chapter iii.ii Junior Ghosts — Premorphic Drift with filmmaker Louise Weard in attendance; A Fragmentary Passage. America Doctor and Deep in the Heart 2: Texas River, with Austin-based wildlife director Ben Masters in attendance on Sept. 25, lead the new releases. Retrospective screenings include The Hole, Repo Man, Sherman's March (and its 2026 companion film Remake), The Smallest Show on Earth, Songs from the Second Floor, Vagabond, and the Lates selections Gandahar and Wasted!.
