Directed by married Austin filmmakers Andrew and Melissa Shea, the documentary Flag Day spotlights the Michigan town of Three Oaks’ annual celebration of the 1777 adoption of the U.S. flag. The Sheas chronicles the planning, organization, and execution of Three Oaks’ Flag Day annual festival and parade—considered one of the biggest in the country—against the backdrop of Midwest small-town politics during a contentious 2024 presidential election year. Flag Day will screen at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24, 6:30 p.m. Sept. 25, and 5 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Violet Crown Cinema with directors Andrew Shea and Melissa Shea in attendance. UT Department of Radio-Television-Film Prof. Andrew Shea previously directed the narrative features I’ll Be There, Forfeit, The Corndog Man, and Santa Fe as well as the documentaries Portrait of Wally, Wrestling Alligators, and Buzz. Melissa Shea makes her directorial debut with Flag Day after editing most of her husband Andrew Shea’s films.
