Interview:
Yen Tan,
co-writer/director,
"All That We Love"
![]() Selected as this year’s Austin Asian American Film Festival Opening Night Film, Austin-based writer/director Yen Tan’s highly personal dramedy All That We Love stars Margaret Cho as a divorced magazine publisher struggling to deal with several upheavals in her life. First Emma’s beloved dog Tanner dies, leaving her with a tremendous sense of loss. Then Emma’s daughter Maggie (Alice Lee) announces she is moving to Australia with her fiancé Nate (Devon Bostick). Finally, Emma must contend with the return to L.A. of her estranged ex-husband Andy (Kenneth Choi), an actor in recovery who decades earlier choose his career over Emma and Maggie. All this and more starts to put a strain on Emma’s relationship with her best friend Stan (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), which only further adds to Emma’s emotional downward spiral. All That We Love also stars Atsuko Okatsuka as Andy’s sister Raven and Missi Pyle as foster dog mama Kayla. Inspired by the death of writer/director Yen Tan’s dog Tanner, and co-written with Austin-based filmmaker Clay Liford, All That We Love screens at 6:30 p.m. June 25 as the Austin Asian American Film Festival’s Opening Night Film. Austin-based filmmaker Yen Tan previously directed 1985, Pit Stop, Ciao, and Happy Birthday, and served as one of the four directors of the anthology film Deadroom. Tan also is a graphic designer who specializes in film posters and title design.
