Interview:
Ty Roberts,
director,
"You Gotta Believe"
With his feel-good sport drama You Gotta Believe, Austin-based co-writer/director Ty Roberts captures the Fort Worth Westside All-star baseball team’s improbable run to the Little League World Series in the summer of 2002. Roberts chronicles how the Bad News Bears-ish line-up of North Central Texas kids banded together as a team at the right time to defeat one Goliath after another en route to Williamsport, PA. You Gotta Believe juxtaposes Westside’s surprising win streak against the battle waged against cancer by a beloved team parent and Little League coach, Bobby Ratliff (Luke Wilson). The family film also stars Greg Kinnear as Westside all-star team Coach Jon Kelly, Molly Parker as Kelly’s wife Kathy, and Sarah Gadon as Bobby Ratliff’s wife Patti. You Gotta Believe opens Aug. 30 in theaters. Austin-based Ty Roberts previously directed the 2018 period drama The Iron Orchard and the 2021 fact-based football drama 12 Mighty Orphan, which he co-wrote with his You Gotta Believe screenwriter Lane Garrison and also starred Luke Wilson. Roberts is currently splitting his time between Austin and Argentina, where is he researching an upcoming project on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Aired: Aug. 28, 2024.
