Interview:
Tim Mielants,
director,
"Small Things Like These"
Directed by Tim Mielants, the 1980s-set Irish drama Small Things Like These stars Cillian Murphy as a quiet and unassuming husband and father still grappling with the childhood grief he experienced when his mother died when he was a young boy. The trauma renders Murphy's coal merchant Bill Furlong inert whenever he is faced with life's injustices. But when he crosses paths with a physically and emotionally young woman, Bill is forced to confront a harsh truth that may require him to action. Based on the 2021 novel by Claire Keegan, Small Things Like These is set against the backdrop of Ireland's infamous "Magdalene laundries," Roman Catholic Church-run institutions where trouble girls and women were sent to work for no pay and subjected to cruel treatment. Small Things Like These opened Nov. 8 in theaters. Belgium filmmaker Tim Mielants directed the dramas Wil and Patrick as well as episodes of the TV series Legion and The Terror. He previously directed six episodes of the Cillian Murphy TV series Peaky Blinders. Mielants and Murphy will next collaborate on the drama Steve. Posted: Nov. 8, 2024.
