"Live from New York:
The Lorne Michaels Collection"
The Harry Ransom Center's exhibition "Live from New York: The Lorne Michaels Collection" offers a walk-through the life and the career of the celebrated television creator and producer responsible for the long-running NBC comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live. While a history of Lorne Michaels is a history of SNL, the exhibition also focuses on the Toronto-born comedy institution's early years writing for such television variety shows as Lily Tomlin's Lily and Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In; his attempt to launch The New Show during his SNL leave of absence between 1980 and 1985; the SNL and non-SNL films and television shows he has produced in the past 40 years; and his profound influence on comedy since he launched SNL in 1975. Running through March 22, the exhibition includes photos, scripts, props, and costumes from the Lorne Michaels Collection, which the Harry Ransom Center acquired in 2025. The collection will continue to be available to the public for research after the exhibition closes. The Harry Ransom Center presents two remaining film screenings in March in conjunction with the exhibition: the documentary Downey Wrote That screens at 6 p.m. March 11, with former SNL writer Jim Downey in attendance, and the 2004 Lorne Michaels-produced Mean Girls screens at 6 p.m. March 12.
