Interview:
Scott Ballew,
director,
"All That is Sacred"
Directed by Austin-based filmmaker Scott Ballew, the documentary All That is Sacred chronicles the rise, influence, and gradual dissolving of a community of artists in Key West of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Ballew examines how the likes of musician Jimmy Buffett and writers Thomas McGuane, Jim Harrison, and Richard Brautigan were drawn to and found inspiration in the colorful and unpredictable lifestyle offered by the southernmost city in the United States. All That is Sacred intercuts interviews with Buffett and McGuane—who is married to Buffett’s sister Laurie—with footage from Christian Odasso and Guy de la Valdene’s Tarpon, a rarely seen 1973 documentary about modern fishing in the Florida Keys that features tMcGuane, Harrison, and Brautigan and a score by Buffett. All That is Sacred is now available to stream at YouTube. Austin-based filmmaker and singer-songwriter Scott Ballew directed or oversaw more than 100 short films during his 9-year tenure as YETI’s Head of Content, which ended earlier this year. In March, Ballew released his third album, Rio Bravo, which includes the title song to All That is Sacred. The Austin native, who played running back for the Texas Longhorns, was also the subject of the 2023 documentary Can You Hear Me Smiling. Aired: July 31, 2024.
