Written by and starring Texas native Samantha Smart, the drama Charliebird explores the relationship between a Houston children's hospital music therapist and a 17-year-old girl recovering from a kidney transplant. Al (Smart) initially finds the Charlie (Gabriela Ochoa Perez) resistant to music therapy. When Charlie finally lets her guard down, Al quickly employs both music and non-music activities and resources to reach the otherwise challenging teenager. But the evolving emotional connection between Al and Charlie comes with its own set of challenges. Directed by Libby Ewing, Charliebird will screen at 4 p.m. Oct. 26 during the Austin Film Festival. Charliebird represents League City-born Samantha Smart's first produced screenplay. She previously starred in the 2022 thriller Liberty and appeared in episodes of Dear White People, Grow the F*ck Up, Tommy, God Friended Me, Katy Keene, and Bull.
