Family means everything in Austin-based director Russell K. Reed’s Hierarchy. Off-screen, the Austin-shot crime thriller was born of the friendship and creative relationship between three filmmakers who met as students at Texas State University: Reed, writer/co-lead Chiderah Uzowulu, and co-lead Xavier Alvarado. Uzowulu wrote Hierarchy, which focuses on adopted brothers planning a major heist. Uzowulu plays Stone, engineer by day, master thief by night; Alvarado plays Reach, an accountant and the brains of the gang he and Stone lead. They carefully plot their next job aware that state and federal authority are watching their every move. Further complicating matters: another adopted brother, the rash and unpredictable Driscoll (Dylan Winters), is released from prison and wants in on the action. Then there are the Russian mobsters Stone and Reach must unexpectedly contend with as they put the finishing touches to their plan. Shot in 2021, and released in 2025 in theaters and on-demand, Hierarchy also stars Jenny Frame as lead investigating officer Captain Domingo.
