Pan African Film Festival 2026
The L.A.-based Pan African Film + Arts Festival returns to Austin on July 30 with its fourth annual satellite event, the Pan African Film Festival 2006, at the AFS Cinema. With screenings running through Aug. 1, the festival devoted to Black storytelling opens with the Congolese medical drama Muganga, The One Who Treats. The festival also includes the music documentary Play It Loud! How Toronto Got Soul with director Graeme James Mathieson and writer/producer Andrew Munger in attendance; the cultural documentary Black is Beautiful: Kwame Brathwaite; a 20th anniversary screening of the body positive comedy Phat Girlz with director Nnegest Likké; and a package of seven shorts and webisodes. The Before Sunrise-inspired romantic two-hander Montmartre, with writer/director Leon Hendrix III in attendance, serves as the festival’s closing night film on Aug. 1. The festival concludes with the panel “Culture Can’t Be Automated — or Can It?: Storytelling and AI” at held 3 p.m. Aug. 2 at the AFS Cinema followed by a mixer at 4 p.m.
