Pan African Film Festival 2025
The L.A.-based Pan African Film + Arts Festival returns to Austin on July 31 with its third satellite event, the Pan African Film Festival 2005, at the AFS Cinema. With screenings running through Aug. 2, the festival opens with the documentary Move Ya Body: The Birth of House, with director Elegance Bratton and producer Chester Algernal Gordo in attendance. The festival also features the narrative prison drama The Man Died and the documentaries Legacy: The De-Colonized History of South Africa, Sun-Ra: Do the Impossible, and the double bill of Born in the Struggle and Dying to Vote. “The Black Immigrants: Telling Our Stories and Visioning the Future” panel discussion at 12:30 p.m. Aug. 2 includes the screening of the short films Boat People, Cartes, and Mexico is Hell for Black People, hosted by the Black Auteur Film Festival co-founder Ryan Darbonne. The festival ends with the panel discussion “The Power of Story: Impacting Change Through Film” at 4 p.m. Aug. 3 at Austin Public.
