Olive Talley,
director,
"The Stones are Speaking"
Directed by Olive Talley, the documentary The Stones are Speaking chronicles the years-long campaign led by Austin-based archaeologist Michael B. Collins and his colleagues to acquire and preserve 30 acres of land of historic significance in the Williamson County city of Florence. Known as the Gault Archaelogical Site, the land contains thousands of buried artifacts dating back to and even pre-dating the Paleoindian period of North America known as Clovis (between 9500 and 9000 BC). During most of the 20th century, Gault's owners allowed collectors to pay to dig for artifacts. But following the early 1990s discovery of more than 20 engraved stones, teams of archaeologists descended upon Gault to unearthed evidence of the occupation of Clovis people more than 12,750 years ago. The documentary details how Collins--a research associate at the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory at the University of Texas—and those under his leadership fought to save Gault as an archaeological, research, and educational site. The Stones are Speaking screens at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at the State Theatre and at 1:15 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Galaxy Theatres Austin during the Austin Film Festival. Dallas-based journalist and filmmaker Olive Talley previously directed the documentary ALL RISE: For the Good of the Children. Posted: Oct. 23, 2024.
