"Not Without Hope"
Directed by Joe Carnahan, the survival thriller Not Without Hope dramatizes the 2009 boating accident that claimed the lives of three men. E. Nicholas Mariani and director Joe Carnahan adapted Not Without Hope from the 2010 non-fiction book of the same name that sole survivor Nick Schuyler wrote with Jeré Longman. Not Without Hope stars Austin-based actor Zachary Levi as Schuyler, a gym owner, a personal trainer, and a former walk-on with the University of South Florida football player. The film also stars Quentin Plair as Oakland Raiders linebacker Marquis Cooper, Terrence Terrell as NFL defensive end Corey Smith, and Marshall Cook as former University of South Florida football player Will Bleakley and Schuyler’s best friend. On Feb. 28, 2009, the four men went fishing off the coast of Clearwater, Florida in Cooper’s 21-foot single-engine boat. The film traces how the friends fought to survive in 60-degree waters after rough weather capsized Cooper’s boat. Not Without Hope, which premiered locally at this year’s Austin Film Festival, opened Dec. 12 in theaters. Austin-based actor Zachary Levi previously starred in Shazam! and its sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Sarah’s Oil, The Unbreakable Boy, Harold and the Purple Crayon, American Underdog, and The Mauritanian. Levi also recently made two Netflix films in Austin for two local directors: Robert Rodriguez’s Spy Kids: Armageddon and Richard Linklater’s Apollo 10 1⁄2: A Space Age Childhood. Quentin Plair currently stars in Chad Powers and also appeared in The Good Lord Bird, Tiny Beautiful Things, and Welcome to Chippendales. Marshall Cook, who previously co-starred in director Joe Carnahan’s Shadow Force and Cop Shop, co-wrote and directed the 2020 comedy Film Fest.
