What better way for a filmmaker to turn the tables on a scam caller than to employ their imposter scam for the plot device of their directorial debut? For her psychosexual melodrama Night Nurse, writer/director Georgia Bernstein sought inspiration in her grandmother almost falling victim to a scam caller claiming to be Bernstein’s brother. After appropriating the scam for good intentions, Bernstein mined her growing fascination with the care industry to concoct a heady tale about a night nurse falling under the dark charm of a scam artist patient. Eleni (Cemre Paksoy) is hired by a residential care community as the night nurse to Douglas (Bruce McKenzie), a handsy patient undergoing a mental health evaluation. Eleni finds herself so mesmerized by Douglas that she barely resists him drawing her into his phone scams targeting the community’s elderly male population. But Douglas’ eagerness to flash his illicit proceeds in public quickly arouses the suspicions of Eleni’s already concerned boss, Doctor Mann (Mimi Rogers). Writer/director Georgia Bernstein wrote the role of Doctor Mann for Mimi Rogers, the mother of Bernstein’s childhood friend and Night Nurse producer Lucy Rogers. Night Nurse opened July 10 in theaters. Mimi Rogers previously starred in Street Smart, Someone to Watch Over Me, The Mighty Quinn, Desperate Hours, The Rapture, The Mirror Has Two Faces, Full Body Massage, Lost in Space, Ginger Snaps, Hope Springs, and The Wedding Ringer. She recently starred in the Prime Video series Bosch: Legacy. Cemre Paksoy appeared in the Turkish TV series The Affair and As the Crow Flies.
