In 2023, Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn died for 25 minutes from heart failure—due to a leaking heart valve—before being brought back to life. Refn’s near-death experience not only left him creatively renewed but inspired him to return to filmmaking after creating and directing two streaming series. Her Personal Hell, Refn’s first film since 2016’s The Neon Demon, revolves around a mysterious, mythical murderer known as The Leatherman. The black-clad serial killer treats a mist-covered city as his personal playground, seeking out vulnerable girls and young women to tear apart with his diamond-encrusted gloved hands. Soon after her famous and charismatic father Johnny Thunders (Dougray Scott) leaves on business, actress Elle (Sophie Thatcher) witnesses from afar The Leatherman at work. The Leatherman remains on Elle's mind as she struggles to reconnect with her stepmother Dominique (Havana Rose Liu) in Johnny's absence. Elsewhere in the city, the grief-stricken Private K (Charles Melton) searches every street and alley for The Leatherman, who dragged his daughter to hell. But Private K's quest to find The Leatherman, and rescue his daughter, comes at a steep and bloody price. Her Personal Hell opens July 24 in theaters. Nicolas Winding Refn previously directed The Neon Demon, Only God Forgives, Drive, Valhalla Rising, Bronson, Fear X, Bleeder, and the Pusher trilogy. He also created and directed every episode of the 2023 Netflix miniseries Copenhagen Cowboy and the 2019 Prime Video miniseries Too Old to Die Young. Aired: July 22, 2026.
