Interview:
Nacho Vigalondo,
writer/director,
"Daniela Forever"
If dreams reflect our reality, can dreams also shape our reality—or some version of our reality? This is the question Henry Golding’s grieving Nicolas must grappled with in writer/director Nacho Vigalondo’s sci-fi-tinged romantic drama Daniela Forever. Unable to move beyond the unexpected death of his girlfriend Daniela (Beatrice Grannò of The White Lotus Season 2), Nicolas agrees to take an experimental pill under the pretense of finally addressing his prolonged grief disorder. The pill allows users to immediately fall into a lucid dream they can shape and recollect with undeniable clarity. For Nicolas, the pill affords him an opportunity to experience a life he was denied with Daniela. At first, Nicolas’ dream life with the Daniela he recalls with blind affection unfolds like a storybook romance. Soon, though, this illusory version Daniela begins to break free of the constraints placed on her by her Nicolas. Daniela Forever, which premiered locally at last year’s Fantastic Fest, opened July 11 in Austin theaters. Spanish filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo previously directed Timecrimes, Extraterrestrial, Colossal, and the Into the Dark! entry Pooka! Vigalondo also directed the 2014 thriller Open Windows in Austin and contributed the segment “A is for Apocalypse” to the Tim League-produced horror anthology The ABCs of Death.
