"Splitville"
With Splitsville, their follow-up to the 2020 SXSW selection The Climb, Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin once again dissect a tight friendship under duress while also toying with the conventions of the romantic comedy. Splitsville focuses on two troubled marriages. Paul (Covino) and Julie (Dakota Johnson) have agreed to an open marriage to keep things fresh and exciting. Carey (Marvin) believes he has found his life partner in Ashley (Adria Arjona). But as Carey drives to Paul and Julie’s lovely beach house for a weekend getaway, a freak car accident prompts Ashley into announcing she wants a divorce. One thing leads to another and Carey ends up sleeping with Julie. Based on this experience, Carey comes to believe that the only way he can save his marriage is to let Ashley see other people until she works through her issues. But this only further complicates matters for all parties. Michael Angelo Covino directed Splitsville from a script he wrote with his creative partner Kyle Marvin. Splitsville opened Aug. 29 in theaters. Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin’s previous collaboration, the 2020 comedy The Climb, will screen at 11:15 a.m. Aug. 29 and at 3:15 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Alamo South Lamar. Covino also appeared in Riff Raff and News of the World. Marvin, who also appeared in the TV miniseries WeCrashed, made his feature film directorial debut with the 2023 comedy 80 for Brady.
