"Las Hijas de Rosalia"
A tribute to her late mother and her life and artistic accomplishments, Austin-based writer/director Maria Mealla’s Las Hijas de Rosalia celebrates the close relationship between a single mother and her two daughters through a warm-hearting tale infused with magical realism. The narrative short spans four decades, with sisters Sofia and Elena slowly coming to understand and appreciate the sacrifices that their musician mother Rosalia made for them when they were children. Yuly Mireles stars as Rosalia, with Sofia portrayed at as a child by Adelyn Rodriguez, as a teenager by Emerald Rose, and as an adult by Leslie Ann Leal and Elena portrayed by as a child by Elizabeth Mia Longoria, as a teenager by Valeria Velasco, and as an adult by Fabiola Andújar. Juan Luqui composed the score and wrote the lyrics with Maria Mealla. Las Hijas de Rosalia premiered at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival as part of the festival’s COLECTIVO Latino storytelling program with the Hispanic Federation and the Miranda Family Fund; Lin-Manuel Miranda serves as one of the short’s executive producers. Las Hijas de Rosalia will screen at 4 p.m. Aug. 8 at the AFS Cinema as part of Sound Unseen Austin 2026’s Super Awesome Kickass Shorts Program. Austin-based filmmaker Maria Mealla previously directed the shorts Juana Pelos, La Macana, Bring Me an Avocado, and Scratchers.
