"Subtopia: The Story of Hueco Canyon"
Ever been at war with a homeowners’ association run amok? If so, Luis Caffesse and Cliff Wildman’s Austin-shot mockumentary Subtopia: The Story of Hueco Canyon will directly speak to you. Once a quiet and friendly place to live and raise a family, Hueco Canyon quickly experiences a community civil war when a new HOA president begins imposing one Draconian rule after another in the name of neighborhood harmony and safety. After running afoul of the HOA, disfranchised resident Wally Kaplan embarks on a campaign to unseat the despotic Ellen Nickel as president and return Hueco Canyon to its former glory. But Ellen is not going down without a fight. And she does not play by the rules she expects Hueco Canyon residents to follow. Lowell Bartholomee plays Wally; Hilah Johnson plays Ellen. Shot in 2010, but completed this year, Subtopia: The Story of Hueco Canyon screens at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Rollins Theatre at the Long Center and at 6:15 p.m. Oct. 31 at the Galaxy Theatres Austin during the Austin Film Festival. Subtopia: The Story of Hueco Canyon directors Luis Caffesse and Cliff Wildman previously collaborated on the TV series Project: Rant, which starred many of their Subtopia cast members. Luis Caffesse also appeared in the 2021 TV series Rebel Without a Crew: The Robert Rodriguez Film School. Aired: Oct. 23, 2024.
