"Meat Joy:
America's Entertainment Nightmare"
In 2023, the short-lived Austin punk band Meat Joy reunited for the first time since their 1985 split for two local shows that coincided with the re-issue of their self-titled 1984 album and the release of the book “The True Story of Meat Joy: America’s Entertainment Nightmare.” Whether Meat Joy achieved true infamy as America’s entertainment nightmare is open to debate, but the band’s significant influence on the Austin music scene of the mid-1980s cannot be denied. Directed by Austin filmmaker Lauren Yap, the short documentary Meat Joy: America’s Entertainment Nightmare affords the five musicians—Melissa (Cobb) DeMille, Tim Mateer, Gretchen Phillips, Teresa Taylor, and Oscar-nominated actor John Hawkes—an opportunity to recount in their own words their accomplishments as a band and as an art collective at a time when Reaganomics was beginning to take its hold on Texas and the rest of the United States. Culled from photos and footage supplied by Meat Joy, Yap’s documentary also chronicles the circumstances that led the band to reunite and return to Austin to perform two intimate shows before an audience both old and young. Meat Joy: America’s Entertainment Nightmare will screen at 4 p.m. Aug. 8 at the AFS Cinema as part of Sound Unseen Austin 2026’s Super Awesome Kickass Shorts Program. Lauren Yap is the co-artistic director of the Austin-based OUTsider LGBTQ+ festival and conference. They previously appeared in P.J. Raval’s 2023 documentary Who We Become and is currently directing I Need Space, a documentary about Austin’s queer nightlife scene.
