Interview:
Kim A. Snyder,
director,
"The Librarians"
![]() Directed by Oscar-nominated documentarian Kim A. Snyder, The Librarians chronicles the rise of book bans across the country in the wake of the October 2021 release of then-Texas State Representative Matt Krause’s list of 850 books he declared could “make students feel discomfort.” Although condemned by opponents as political overreach, Krause’s targeting of books prominently dealing with race and sexuality led to multiple campaigns by extremist parents groups and conservative businesses to remove books from school and municipal libraries, first in Texas and then in Florida before spreading to other states. Snyder reveals how librarians across the country are fighting back against book bans while facing harassment and the threat of losing their jobs. The Librarians screens during the SXSW Film & TV Festival at 6 p.m. Friday, March 7 at the Alamo South Lamar and at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8 at the AFS Cinema. Kim A. Snyder previously directed the feature-length documentaries Newtown and Welcome to Shelbyville. Her 2024 short documentary Death by Numbers was nominated for Best Documentary Short Film at the year’s Academy Awards. Aired: March 5, 2025.
