Submitted for your approval: the case of one Rod Serling, traumatized World War II veteran, acclaimed television writer and creator, and uncompromising social commentator. With his documentary Serling, director Jonah Tulis’ presents a first-person exploration of the life and the career of the man who forever changed both television and science fiction with his 1959-1964 CBS anthology series The Twilight Zone. Through unheard audio, unseen footage, and archival material, the documentary takes us a journey of the highly influential Serling's humble beginnings, the World War II experiences that shaped and informed him as an adult, his sociopolitical concerns, and his rise and retreat from network television. Counting Leonardo DiCaprio among its producers, Serling screens at 3:30 p.m. March 16 at the State Theatre, 5:30 p.m. March 17 at the Alamo South Lamar, and 5:30 p.m. March 18 at the AFS Cinema during the SXSW Film & TV Festival. Jonah Tulis previously directed the comedy The Flying Scissors and the documentaries Such Great Heights, Console Wars, and GameStop: Rise of the Players. Tulis and frequent collaborator Blake J. Harris are currently working on an untitled documentary about Austin’s Ross Ulbricht, aka “Dread Pirate Roberts,” whom President Donald Trump pardoned in 2025 of crimes related to the darknet marketplace Ulbricht created, Silk Road.
