Interview:
Jon Spira,
director,
"The Life and Deaths of Christopher Lee"
Few British actors are as closely associated with horror as the late Christopher Lee. While he did not bite the hand that fed, Lee much spent of the career trying to prove he was much more than one of cinema’s finest Draculas. Directed by Jon Spira, the documentary The Life and Deaths of Christopher Lee traces the aristocratic actor’s initial struggles to find his place in British cinema after his hush-hush World War II military career; achieving iconic status through his work with the British production house of horrors Hammer Films; his desire to display his range as an actor through The Wicker Man; finally finding success outside of horror thanks to The Man with the Golden Gun and relocating to Hollywood; and his late career resurgence through his roles in the Star Wars prequel trilogy and The Lord of the Rings. The documentary, which includes interviews with Peter Jackson, Joe Dante, and John Landis, is narrated by a Christopher Lee marionette that is voiced by British actor Peter (Sera-fin-o-wich) Serafinowicz (Shaun of the Dead, Guardians of the Galaxy, John Wick Chapter 2, and the voice of Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace). The Life and Deaths of Christopher Lee will screen at 11:50 a.m. Sept. 22 and 2:35 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Alamo South Lamar during Fantastic Fest. Jon Spira previously directed the documentaries Elstree 1976 and Hollywood Bulldogs: The Rise and Falls of the Great British Stuntman as well as the documentary mini-series Reel Britannia.
