Interview:
John MacLean,
writer/director,
"Tornado"
![]() Written and directed by John MacLean, the British period thriller Tornado pits a young Japanese woman against a criminal gang in pursuit of the ill-gotten gains she stole from right under their noses. Kōki stars as Tornado, who travels the harsh British countryside during the late 18th century performing in a samurai puppet-and-sword show opposite her father Fujin (Shōgun’s Takehiro Hira). Disgruntled with both her morally superior father and her current circumstances, Tornado sees an opportunity to improve her lot in life when she pilfers a bag of gold coins stolen from a church by the highwaymen led by Tim Roth’s brutal Sugarman. Refusing to become a victim of theft himself, Sugarman embarks on a bloody rampage to track down Tornado and retrieve his money. Tornado opened May 30 in theaters. Tornado writer/director John MacLean previously directed the 2015 Michael Fassbender western Slow West. He also was a founding member of two Scottish indie rock bands, The Beta Band and The Aliens.
