Punk-funk pioneers, skateboarders, “Fun, Fun, Fun”-sters—Austin band the Big Boys left an indelible mark on the city in the 1980s, both on stage and at the skate park. Directed by Joe Salinas, and edited and produced by Andrew Leeper, the documentary You Can Color Outside the Lines: The Story of the Big Boys chronicles the Austin band’s rise and demise, from their first four years as skateboarders in search of a half-pipe to their last four years as one of the architects of the nation’s skate punk scene. Led by the flamboyant lead vocalist Randy “Biscuit” Turner, who died in 2005, the Big Boys applied their DIY ethnos to anything and everything—recording music, handcrafting record sleeves, handbills, and concert posters, and booking and promoting punk showcases in Austin—before they burned out and went their separate ways in 1984. But the Big Boys’ mantra—“Now go start your own band!”—and their skateboard anarchy logo remain as relevant and as vital today as they did during their heyday. Salinas and Lepper’s documentary includes interviews with the Big Boys guitarist Tim Kerr and bassist Chris Gates, Exene Cervenka and John Doe of X, Mike Watt of Minutemen, David Yow of the Jesus Lizard, Jeff Nelson of Minor Threat, the late producer and musician Steve Albini, Tony Alva of Dogtown, and Zorlac Skateboards co-founder Jeff Newton. You Can Color Outside the Lines: The Story of the Big Boys will screen at 9:15 p.m. Aug. 8 during Sound Unseen Austin 2026 at the AFS Cinema with director Joe Salinas, editor/producer Andrew Leeper, and Big Boys guitarist Tim Kerr in attendance. Director Joe Salinas is an El Paso-based photographer and multimedia artist who has directed commercials, music videos, military productions, and branded campaigns. He has also played with the bands My Golden Calf and Cano. Austin-based editor/producer Andrew Leeper previously directed commercials as well as music videos for …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, Gentlemen Rogues, and Black Books. He has played with Dynamite Boy and Band of Bastard.
