"Cornbread Mafia"
Declared “the largest domestic marijuna-producing organization ever” by the DEA, the so-called “Cornbread Mafia” reigned supreme in Kentucky for almost two decades before its dismantling by law enforcement. Evan Mascagni and Drew Morris’ documentary Cornbread Mafia chronicles the improbable rise of the criminal cooperation of Kentucky in the early 1970s, its expansion into border states and beyond in the early 1980s, and its downfall in the late 1980s. The documentary focuses on the Cornbread Mafia’s four key ringleaders: Joe Keith Bickett and his brother Jimmy Bickett, Bobby Joe "The Vet" Shewmaker, and Johnny “The Godfather of Grass” Boone. Cornbread Mafia screens at 9:30 p.m. March 12 at the Rollins Theatre at the Long Center, 2:45 p.m. March 16 at the Alamo South Lamar, and 6 p.m. March 18 at the Alamo South Lamar during the SXSW Film & TV Festival. The documentary is inspired by the trilogy of memoirs by Joe Keith Bickett, who served more than 20 years in federal prison for his involvement in the Cornbread Mafia. Posted: March 16, 2026.
