"The Wasps"
![]() A backyard filmed version of the 422 BC play by Aristophanes, The Wasps satirizes life and democracy in Athens at the time when politician and military leader Cleon held great power and influence. Directed by Jake Binstock and Parker Rouse, the Austin-shot black-and-white comedy viciously attacks the judicial system that confers Cleon with power. The Wasps pits Procleon (Dale Dobson), an old man addicted to serving on juries, against his young son Anticleon (Luke Ellis), who seeks to cure Procleon of his “disease” and free him of Cleon’s political hold. The Wasps represents the feature-length directorial debut of the Baltimore-based Jake Binstock and the Austin-based Parker Rouse. They shot The Wasps in the backyard of the house they shared in the Cherrywood neighborhood. Executive produced by Richard Linklater, The Wasps will screen 7 p.m. tomorrow, March 27 at the Violet Crown Cinema with co-writer/co-director Parker Rouse in attendance. Jake Binstock and Parker Rouse previously collaborated on the short films Clown Cry, Art Van Abner, and Sullivan's Cove.
