Never mind the bollocks, here’s Panty Christ. And Anti-Pho. And Sin Mints. Celebrating the DIY spirit of Austin’s punk rock community, director Jacob Miguel’s documentary Punk Rock Lottery follows the trials and tribulations faced by the local musicians competing in the titular “battle of the bands”-style contest. Initially thrown as a birthday bash by Krum Bums guitarist Trae Martinez, the annual Punk Rock Lottery contest finds Austin singers and musicians drawn from random to form bands with the sole purpose of competing against each other during one night of rock ’n’ roll mayhem. To win the top prize, a band must compose five original songs, master a cover, come up with the best band name, and kick ass during the contest’s closing concert. Among the contestants during the 2017 Punk Rock Lottery: documentary director Jacob Miguel, who serves as the lead singer of Panty Christ. The documentary also features the bands Anti-Pho, Beaker Tweekers, Fanny Felcher and the Crazy Straws, K2 Kings, Looking for a Kiss, Sin Mints, and The T.V. Traes. Miguel also offers a brief history of Austin’s early punk scene, highlighted by the infamous 1978 police raid on Raul’s Nightclub during a performance by the Huns. Punk Rock Lottery includes interviews with the contest’s founders Trae Martinez and Ivy Reed, the Austin Chronicle’s co-founder Louis Black, and the Huns drummer Tom Huckabee, who died in 2022. Punk Rock Lottery will screen at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 29 at the Hyperreal Film Club with producer Michael Richard Greene and documentary subjects in attendance. The documentary is also available to stream on Tubi, Hoopla, and Fawesome. Former Austinite Jacob Miguel makes his directorial debut with Punk Rock Lottery. Michael Richard Greene produced the 2019 drama Here We Are and co-produced this year’s Austin Film Festival selection Sell Out.
