"Time Passes: Thirty-Five Years with Tsai Ming-liang" Series
Presented by the Austin Asian American Film Festival and the Austin Film Society, the series Time Passes: Thirty-Five Years with (Sigh Ming Lang) Tsai Ming-liang runs Aug. 21-24 at the AFS Cinema. Tsai Ming-liang, the Malaysian-born, Taiwan-based master of contemplative cinema, will attend the series. He will be joined by his frequent collaborator and muse, Lee Kang-sheng, the star of the 10-film Walker series, which finds a monk slowly exploring a city by foot. The Time Passes series features five features directed by Tsai Ming-liang: 1994’s Vive L’Amour in 35mm on Aug. 21; 2003’s Goodbye, Dragon Inn on Aug. 22; 2001’s What Time is it There in 35mm on Aug. 23; and the 2024 U.S.-shot Walker installment Abiding Nowhere and 2020’s Days on Aug. 24. A shorts program, featuring work directed by both Tsai Ming-liang and Lee Kang-sheng, will screen on Aug. 23. Tsai Ming-liang and/or Lee Kang-sheng will either introduce each film or participate in a post-screening discussion. Aired: Aug. 20, 2025.
