Cine Las Americas International Film Festival
Celebrating the work of Latinx and Indigenous filmmakers, the Cine Las Americas International Film Festival runs May 13-17 at the AFS Cinema and the Violet Crown Cinema. The festival opens May 13 with American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez, a documentary about the Mexican-America playwright, filmmaker, and activist. Valdez’s 1987 Ritchie Valens music biopic La Bamba will screen in 35mm at 10 p.m. May 16 at the AFS Cinema with an introduction by lead actor Lou Diamond Phillips. The festival closes May 17 with the Mexican political satire Versalles. The festival also includes the narratives The Blindman (Trabajo Para Cesar), The Ivy (Hiedra), Oca, Permit (Capo), Pucallpa la Europea, Three Times (Tres Tiempos), and the Lou Diamond Phillips thriller Keep Quiet as well as the documentaries Casa Muertas, Comparsa, Return of the Sacred Red Rock, Street Smart: Lessons from a TV Icon, Uyariy, and Vidas en la orilla. The festival will also shine a spotlight on Austin- and Texas-made shorts with its Hecho en Tejas competition program on Sunday, May 17. The Cine Las Americas International Film Festival Conference, featuring panels and conversations, will be held May 16 at the Holiday Inn Austin Midtown.
