Interview:
Fernando Andres,
co-writer/director,
"Rent Free"
What would you do to save enough money to move out of state? In Austin-based co-writer/director Fernando Andrés’ comedy Rent Free, best friends Ben and Jordan plot to conserve their rent money in order to relocate from an Austin they no longer enjoy or recognize to New York City. To do so, though, Ben and Jordan plan to spend a year crashing “rent free” at the home of any friend or family member who will have them. Unfortunately, each expected and unexpected move from one house to the next apartment not just places greater strain on Ben and Jordan’s lifelong friendship and threatens their goal to leave behind an ever-changing Austin that no longer feels like home. Jacob Roberts stars as the rash and exploitative Ben; David Trevino stars as Jordan, an anxious overthinker whose interactions with the openly gay Ben forces him to explore his long-undefined sexuality. Rent Free screens at 7 p.m. Aug. 21 at the AFS Cinema and at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Galaxy Theatres Austin as the opening night selection of the All Genders, Lifestyles, and Identities Film Festival’s Prism 37. Austin-based filmmaker Fernando Andrés previously co-wrote and co-directed the Prism 35-selected drama Three Headed Beast with his Rent Free co-writer Tyler Rugh.
