Interview:
Emily Robinson,
star/writer/director,
"Ugly Cry"
Can you cry on cue? If so, can you also “beautiful” cry on cue? In the dark Hollywood satire Ugly Cry, writer/director Emily Robinson stars as Delaney, an actress waiting on her big break. She thinks she has a shot at landing a lead role in a horror film. But the producers don’t like the “ugly” cry she gives during her virtual audition. Unable to improve her cry without ruining the rest of her audition, Delaney resorts to extreme measures to give the producers want they want and need from her. And Delaney soon cannot separate reality from delusion. Ugly Cry screens at 6:45 p.m. March 12 at the Alamo South Lamar, 3:15 p.m. March 14 at the Alamo South Lamar, and 3 p.m. March 15 at the Violet Crown Cinema during the SXSW Film & TV Festival. Emily Robinson, who makes her feature directorial debut with Ugly Cry, appeared in Eighth Grade and the TV series Transparent. Posted: March 14, 2026.
