"Armadillo Man:
The Trips of Jim Franklin"
Directed by Emil Lozada, Armadillo Man: The Trips of Jim Franklin examines the life and career of the Austin-based artist and illustrator whose poster art and onstage antics helped define the weirdness of 1970s Austin. The short documentary explores the Galveston-born Jim Franklin’s childhood passion for art, his eventual move to Austin to develop his artistic talents, the poster art and album covers that put him on the map, and his adoption of the armadillo as his signature image. Lozada also highlightes Franklin’s relationship with the legendary Armadillo World Headquarters, where he served as the music venue’s Art Squad leader and held court as its most prominent emcee. Armadillo Man: The Trips of Jim Franklin includes interviews with Franklin, Armadillo World Headquarters founder/owner Eddie Wilson, and Armadillo Art Squad artists Danny Garrett and Guy Juke. Armadillo Man: The Trips of Jim Franklin will screen at 9:35 p.m. Oct. 24 and at 6:45 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Galaxy Theatres Austin as part of the Austin Film Festival’s “Everything is Shorter in Texas” shorts program. Austin-based filmmaker Emil Lozada previously co-directed the short films Grey Horse and The Queen vs. Texas.
