Interview:
E.L. Katz,
director,
"Azrael"
Set decades after the Rapture reduced civilization to ruins and left many survivors burned and disfigured beyond recognition, director E.L. Katz’s dialogue-free post-apocalyptic Azrael pits Samara Weaving’s eponymous wanderer against members of a matriarchal religious community that does not take kindly to strangers. The villagers maintain an uneasy peace with the so-called Burnt People by feeding outsiders to the cannibalistic creatures. After being captured by the villagers, Azrael plots her escape to avoid being the next human sacrificed to the Burnt People. Azrael, which premiered locally during this year’s SXSW Film & TV Festival, opened Sept. 27 in theaters. E.L. Katz previously directed Cheap Thrills, Small Crimes, and the segment “A is for Amateur” for the anthology film ABCs of Death 2. He also directed two episodes of the new Peacock miniseries Teacup, a sci-fi survival thriller based on the 1988 novel “Stinger” by Robert R. McCammon. Teacup , which premiered locally during this year's Fantastic Fest, will debuts Oct. 10 on Peacock.
