Interview:
Dylan Southern,
writer/director,
"The Thing With Feathers"
Music and concert documentary filmmaker Dylan Southern makes his narrative feature directorial debut with The Thing With Feathers, a dark and haunting study in grief starring Benedict Cumberbatch. In Southern’s adaptation of Max Porter’s 2015 novella “Grief Is the Thing with Feathers,” Cumberbatch plays as an unnamed graphic novelist in mourning for the recent death of his wife and struggling to raise their two young sons. When Cumberbatch falls too deep into despair, he receives a visit from a giant, anthropomorphic black crow that serves as the manifestation of Cumberbatch’s grief. Voiced by David Thewlis and performed by Eric Lampaert, the crow torments Cumberbatch to the point he can no longer function, forcing Cumberbatch to choose between living for his sons or succumbing to his despondency. The Thing With Feathers opened Nov. 28 in theaters. British filmmaker Dylan Southern previously directed the Blur documentary No Distance Left to Run, the LCD Soundsystem concert film Shut Up and Play the Hits, the Netflix comedy special Aziz Ansari: Buried Alive, and the indie rock documentary Meet Me in the Bathroom.
