![]() Adapted from the 2019 novel by Shannon Pufahl, the Daniel Minahan-directed LGBTQ+ period drama On Swift Horses focuses on two brothers trying to make their way in life after returning from the Korean War. Lee (Will Poulter) sees California as the promised land, so he relocates there from Kansas with his wife Muriel (Daisy Edgar-Jones). Lee’s younger brother Julius (Jacob Elordi) promises to joins him in San Diego, but the amateur poker player gets sidetracked in Nevada. While working at a casino, Julius quietly enters into a romantic relationship with a fellow gaming surveillance operator, Henry (Babylon’s Diego Clava). At the same time, Muriel finds herself living two lives in San Diego: one as Lee’s dutiful wife, the other as a gambler whose success betting on horse-racing emboldens her to explore her sexuality. On Swift Horses also stars The Flash’s Sasha Calle as Muriel’s neighbor Sandra. On Swift Horses, which premiered locally as this year’s SXSW Film & TV Festival’s Closing Night Film, opens Friday (April 25) in theaters. Daniel Minahan co-wrote the 1996 fact-based drama I Shot Andy Warhol before making his directorial debut with the 2001 reality TV satire Series 7: The Contenders. Minahan then transitioned to television, directing episodes of Six Feet Under, The L Word, Deadwood, Commander in Chief. Grey’s Anatomy, Big Love, True Blood , The Good Wife, game of Thrones, The Newsroom, Ray Donovan, Homeland, House of Cards, and American Crime Story. He also directed and executive produced the Netflix miniseries Halston and served as a director and an executive producer of the critically acclaimed Showtime period miniseries Fellow Travelers.
