"Deathstalker"
Writer/director Steven Kostanski’s tongue-in-cheek remake of the Roger Corman-financed 1983 sword and sorcery epic Deathstalker stars Daniel Bernhardt as a battle-weary ex-soldier tasked with thwarting the plans of the evil wizard Nekromemnon. Bernhardt’s Deathstalker becomes the victim of a curse after he steals an amulet of unknown origin. When he embarks on a quest to lift the curse, Deathstalker crosses paths with another wizard, the diminutive troll-like creature Doodad, who quickly realizes only Deathstalker can stop Nekromemnon from enslaving the land of Abraxion. Deathstalker also stars Patton Oswalt as the voice of Doodad, Laurie Field as Doodad’s suit performer, and Christina Orjalo as thief-turned-warrior Brisbayne. Deathstalker will screen at 5:40 p.m. Sept. 20 and at 2:10 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Alamo South Lamar during Fantastic Fest. Deathstalker opens Oct. 10 in theaters. Swiss-born action star Daniel Bernhardt made his film debut in 1996’s Bloodsport II: The Next Kumite, appeared in the 1998 TV series Mortal Kombat: Conquest, and starred as Agent Johnson in The Matrix franchise. In recent years, Bernhardt has worked extensively with stunt performer-turned-filmmaker David Leitch, appearing the Leitch-directed Atomic Blonde and Hobbs & Shaw and the Leitch-produced John Wick, Nobody, and Nobody 2. He also appeared in Birds of Prey, Skylines, Red Notice, Extraction 2, The Killer’s Game, and the John Wick spinoff Ballerina. Bernhardt is also a stunt performer and a fight choreographer. Steven Kostanski previously directed Frankie Freako, Psycho Gorman, Leprechaun Returns, and Manborg. He also directed the ABCs of Death 2 segment “W is for Wish” and co-directed The Void and Father’s Day.
