Interview:
Christopher Yates,
writer/director,
"American Spirit"
![]() Written and directed by Austin-based Christopher Yates, the romantic dramedy American Spirit spends a single early morning with two University of Texas students who reconnect years after they broke up in high school. Melody (Ms. Marvel’s Yasmeen Fletcher) and Jonathan (Never Have I Ever’s Cooper Roth) meet by chance outside a convenience store at 2 a.m. in the morning. Before they know it, Melody and Jonathan roam the UT campus catching up, reminiscing about what was, and what could have been had they continued dating. Gradually, though, the small talk gives way to deeper conversations about life, love, and the future. Ms. Marvel’s Yasmeen Fletcher stars as Melody; Never Have I Ever’s Cooper Roth stars as Jonathan. American Spirit screens at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at the State Theatre and at 9:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Galaxy Theatres Austin during the Austin Film Festival. American Spirit represents UT alum Christopher Yates’ feature-length director debut. Aired: Oct. 30, 2024. Web sites: http://www.austinfilmfestival.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AustinFilmFestival |
