Interview:
Chris Stuckmann,
writer/director,
"Shelby Oaks"
Produced by the Austin-based Paper Street Pictures, the supernatural chiller Shelby Oaks represents YouTube film critic Chris Stuckmann’s feature-length directorial debut. Stuckmann incorporates found footage elements into a traditional narrative that focuses on a woman’s search for her sister, a YouTube paranormal investigator who went missing 12 years earlier during a film shoot in an abandoned Ohio town. Mia (Camille Sullivan) heads to Shelby Oaks after receiving a recording under strange and mysterious circumstance that hints at the fate of her sister Riley (Sarah Durn). But Mia is not prepared for what she finds and uncovers in Shelby Oaks. Shelby Oaks also stars Brendan Sexton III as Mia’s husband Robert, Michael Beach as an investigating police detective, and Keith David as the former warden of Shelby Oak’s since-shuttered prison. Shelby Oaks will screen at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 19 and at 11:30 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Alamo South Lamar during Fantastic Fest. Chris Stuckmann conceived Shelby Oaks with his wife Samantha Elizabeth after a fortuitous meeting with Paper Street Pictures co-founder Aaron B. Koontz at the 2019 Fantastic Fest, and shot the deeply personal film in 2022. Shelby Oaks underwent an additional round of shooting in March 2025 less than a year after Neon acquired worldwide rights the film. Genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan also joined as an executive producer during Shelby Oaks' post-production. Shelby Oaks opens in theaters on Oct. 24.
