Interview:
Chris Marrs Piliero,
writer/director,
"Appofeniacs"
Deepfake technology comes under intense scrutiny in writer/director Chris Marrs Piliero’s ensemble anthology thriller Appofeniacs. Piss off the petty and vindictive Duke (Aaron Holiday) for even the most insignificant of reasons and he will deepfake you saying something that will land you in a world of trouble and hurt. Appofeniacs follows the trials and tribulations of several of Duke’s victims—including Sean Gunn’s cosplay props artisan and Paige Searcy’s store owner—over the course of several overlapping stores. The film also stars Jermaine Fowler as Duke’s equally shady and opportunistic acquaintance. Appofeniacs will screen at 2 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Alamo South Lamar during Fantastic Fest. Music director Chris Marrs Piliero makes his feature film directorial debut with Appofeniacs. The title of the film is derived from the term “appofenia,” which means making something out of nothing or finding patterns where there are none.
